ZOHO CRM - Triggering WORKFLOW Rules with a custom function

In Zoho CRM Workflow Automation, 'Rules' trigger 'Actions', where an 'Action' can be an Alert, a Task, a Field Update, A Webhook, or a Custom Function.

Rules can either be "Record action"-based or Date Field-based.

For Rules that are Record action based, the Record action Options are:
  • Create
  • Edit
  • Create or Edit
  • Field Update
  • Delete

meaning, that whenever a User manually creates a record, edits a record, updates a field in a record or deletes a record, the workflow Action will be triggered.

BEWARE -  "update" actions performed on records through a custom function are NOT considered "Record actions" and will not trigger a workflow!!

Date Field Based Rules are triggered based on a date field value.  You choose the date field and select the following:
  • Execute On, Before or After
  • If Before or After, # Days
  • Execution Cycle (Once, Monthly, Annually)
the rule will be triggered based on these parameters.  

The good news is that if you write the date into the record with a custom function, the rule WILL BE TRIGGERED!
